Okay well it looks like a go then. We should think of our first subject and then we can get going.
Does someone your age feel the effects of the economy right now?
I don’t think you do because you have very little responsibility and the rate of pay you make, while good money for someone your age, doesn’t have a significant impact on your life. eg. if you have to go get a job for a few dollars an hour less than what you are currently making it would have very little impact on your life.
On the contrary, my low wage means that a dollar an hour or two has a higher impact ratio-wise to my overall income. When my expenses are already set at a level that I have to watch my budget carefully, a dollar an hour is going to be felt a lot more for me than someone making twenty or twenty five bucks an hour. Rather, it would seem that someone who has had years of experience in the field and had a decade of savings to invest would be more able to take advantage of an economy on the rise after heavy losses, with capital to flex between different funds and interests that I don’t have a chance to.
Well you have to take into consideration a few things you don’t mention.
A. The median HOUSEHOLD income for Washington is ~$47,000 for Oregon it is ~$41,000 and the rest of the states are close to those numbers. Broken down that is `$23.00 an hour. That means with an average family size of 4 either, one person brings in ~$23.00 per hour or one may bring in $13.00 per hour and another person,perhaps a spouse, brings in $10.00 per hour. That is not much of an income for a family.
B. With wages being that low not many people in the median income bracket have investments to help out in tough times these days.
C. If people have investments they take a much larger hit, e.g. losing investment properties, losing multiple points in the stock market, drastic business losses etc. This would have little affect on the younger generation because they would have very little if any investments as a general rule.
D. Most people in the older generation have more responsibility, i.e. families to care for, house payments, car, payments, more peole that money has to care for, etc. that absorbs what they do earn so they end up living paycheck to paycheck.
So, the younger generation, while they may earn a few dollars an hour less, doesn’t earn that much less per person than a person in a median income household because typically households have two incomes these days. The younger generation typically has roomates to share household costs with. Also, their investments if they have any, are not built up much so they are affected less. Lastly, they normally have much less responsibility.
More than likely the younger generation doesn’t worry about losing their home everyday. They don’t worry about losing their job everyday because they will just go get another job bagging groceries or busing tables somewhere else.
All this equates to being less affected by a down economy.
